New England Biolabs | Headquarters

Ipswich, Massachusetts

New England Biolabs is the world’s leading producer of restriction enzymes known as gene splicers. Meridian Associates was selected as the civil engineer and land surveyor as part of a worldwide design competition for New England Biolabs' new headquarters totaling over 140,000 square feet of research space and production facilities.

Sited on the former historic Don Bosco Catholic Retreat grounds in Ipswich, mitigating the environmental impact of the massive campus on this rural setting with minimal impact to the surroundings was paramount. MAI preserved several 100-year-old copper beech trees and a stormwater management facility for the site. The campus comprises laboratories, administrative offices, and housing facilities for visiting scientists from Nobel Prize winners to interns.

The winning design team's proposal for this new laboratory building demonstrated New England Biolabs' progressive and sustainable image while preserving and re-purposing the historic buildings on the site.

This facility meets LEED certification requirements, featuring a heat-deflecting roof, a high-performance curtainwall, and a man-made wetland the serves both as retention pond and a home for wildlife.  The finished facility is cited as “an inspiring example of corporate sustainability.”
