As part of a Meridian laser scanning project, the client requested a 3D structural model to support retrofit design and structural analysis. The structure had been installed in the early 70s, with major modifications in the decades to follow; this added a level of difficulty in creating the steel model. Meridian developed a 3D structural CAD model consolidating changes to reflect current conditions; features modeled include major columns, beams, and cross-bracing. The model was validated against a previously collected scan model to produce an as-built structural model, and delivered to the client in the form of a 3D CAD surface model and SDNF (Structural Detailing Neutral File) format model.
Legacy drawings spanning from initial design through several modifications represented the available information; this information was incomplete and inaccurate. Meridian'rs modeling and validation provided an accurate reference for new design and structural analysis.
